You love the art of eyelash extensions and making your clients feel beautiful. But in addition to the fun aspects of eyelash extensions, you also have to keep track of some not-so-fun practical and legal details. Eyelash laws and regulations are sort of complicated, but here’s the gist of what you need to know as an eyelash pro:
Laws Regulating Eyelash Extensions Vary by State
Laws regulating eyelash extensions are set at the state, rather than federal, level. If you’re not sure what is required, start by looking up your state’s requirements. Most states require a license to apply eyelash extensions. In some states, this can be a general cosmetology or even hairdressing license. In other states, you must be a licensed aesthetician.
A few states do not require a license at all. Be sure to check in on your state’s laws once a year or so as they are subject to change at any time.
Certification is Not the Same Thing as Licensing
You can get certified by a company to apply eyelash extensions, which involves learning eyelash extension skills and passing exams. This certification can be a great asset to your aesthetician business, but it’s not the same thing as a license. If you live in a state that requires you to be a licensed cosmetologist or aesthetician, you must complete the steps to become licensed, regardless of whether or not you are already certified.
If you’re unsure about any of this, it may be a good idea to speak to a small business attorney or contact the appropriate regulatory board in your state. In most states, this would be the Board of Cosmetology. Never offer beauty services without first receiving the required training and licensing. Be sure to let your clients know that you are licensed and certified- this will give them more confidence in your services.
