I began my lash career in 2018 and officially launched my lash and brow business in 2019. During that time, fluffy lash extensions became incredibly popular and shaped the lash industry. From wispy hybrids to bold 20+mm minks, lash extensions offered a semi-permanent alternative to strip lashes, giving clients a stunning, long-lasting look. Styles ranged from subtle, natural sets to dramatic, thick fans, making it possible to achieve a makeup-ready look without daily effort. Lash extensions quickly became the go-to for achieving effortless beauty that lasts for weeks.

Despite their popularity, lash extensions demand has decreased as clients look for more affordable, low-maintenance alternatives. The 2020 pandemic's economic impact, which paused many beauty services, has led to this change. Many are now choosing simpler solutions like lash lifts, which offer a longer-lasting mascara-like effect for a natural, enhanced look without the ongoing maintenance and cost of extensions.

My expertise lies in lash lifts and extensions. Unlike extensions, lash lifts require minimal maintenance. After the first 24-48 hours, you can resume your regular beauty routine without needing to avoid oils or water. Extensions, on the other hand, are more delicate and require extra care. When wearing extensions, it is important to avoid oils, sleeping on them, rubbing your eyes, and to cleanse them with a lash shampoo. Lash lifts only require touch-ups every 4-6 weeks, costing between $100-$200. Extensions, however, need fills every 2-3 weeks. The initial cost of a full set in DC can range from $150-$400, with fills costing between $100-$195+.

The noticeable shift is attributed to the significant contrast in maintenance and pricing. When it comes to lash health, neither method is inherently healthier than the other; it ultimately depends on the client's maintenance routine. For lash lifts, it is important to keep the lashes moisturized, while lash extensions require regular fills every 2-3 weeks. It is crucial not to pick at the extensions and to keep them clean to prevent any permanent damage to the natural lashes.

One more factor that adds to the gradual decrease in popularity of extensions, apart from cost and maintenance, is the emergence of DIY lash clusters. These clusters consist of small bundles of individual false lashes grouped together to create a single cluster. Each bundle usually contains 2 to 6 lashes and is meant to be attached to the lash line to achieve a more voluminous and fuller appearance. Lash clusters are commonly chosen as a substitute for individual lash extensions or strip lashes because they can be applied faster than individual lashes and provide a more natural look compared to full strips.

Unlike traditional lash extensions, lash clusters are meant to be temporary and can last a few days depending on the adhesive used. They are popular because they provide a customizable look—users can choose how many clusters to apply based on the desired volume and style. Lash clusters are ideal for those looking for a DIY lash enhancement that doesn’t require the long-term commitment or maintenance of professional lash extensions.

There is a growing trend among women to embrace natural beauty by opting for a fresh and "no makeup" look. Even though makeup is still used, they aim for a simple appearance. This desired look can be achieved through extensions or lifts, depending on the technician chosen to help achieve the desired outcome. It is crucial to keep up with proper maintenance. Lash technicians will advise and educate clients on available options, so consumers should diligently research to find a trustworthy technician who can deliver the desired results.
